The Talimanidis family has dominated the restaurant scene on the Great Ocean Road for the last thirty years. Beginning with Chris’s restaurant in Lorne in the 1970’s, brothers Kosta and Chris were hugely successful, prompting Kosta to branch out on his own, opening Kostas Taverna in 1976, in the main street of Lorne.

Kosta , Pam and their three boys soon established Kostas as an icon destination for food lovers. Kosta gaining a reputation as the host who made everyone feel welcome and special, while Pam developed a menu based loosely around Greek family recipes, but refined to capture the essence of Greece using the best of Australian produce, particularly local seafood. Kosta would spare no effort to source the freshest and best quality which was available in the market.

After 27 years at ‘Kostas’ it was time for a break to reassess their lives. A year off was long enough to know that they were too young and energetic to retire, so when a property came for sale just up the road in Airey’s Inlet they knew that it was the opportunity they were looking for.

They opened ‘a la grecque’ in November 2004 with a fresh canvas, a new simple menu and with son Alex on board as a partner and chef. The food is elegant but unpretentious. Real food prepared from the freshest, best quality seasonal ingredients.

Kostas is still spending his days chasing fishermen for the special bits of local whiting, kalamari or octopus which never find their way to the markets; and his nights greeting everyone who walks through the door making sure that they have an unforgettable dining experience. Pam and Alex are always to be found ‘hands on’ in the kitchen and sons, Strato and Dominic make regular appearances on the floor. It’s a family thing.
